Boyd Professor and Head
Full-time education and research has occupied the career of Dr. John N. Kent since he received his bachelor’s degree from Hasting College, Nebraska and DDS in 1963 from the University of Nebraska. After three years in the United States Public Health Service Dr. Kent received his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency training at the University of Texas, in Houston. He subsequently served as a full-time Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery faculty member at the University of Texas in Houston, University of Iowa, and has been the department head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU and Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Charity Hospital in New Orleans since 1973.
He was appointed Boyd Professor by the LSU system in 1983 and has served as President-Elect of the medical staff at the University Hospital and President of the Louisiana Society and the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In 1988 the LSU Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery received the LSU Medical Center's first one million chair, The James R. Peltier Endowed Chair with Dr. Kent occupying the chair as its first eminent scholar. Dr. Kent's teaching and research has rendered him an authority in orthognathic surgery, reconstructive surgery, dental implants and biomaterial with authorship in 15 textbooks, over 250 journals, and abstract publications, including the first textbook on orthognathic surgery in the United States.
He has authored 40 research reports and has received the AAOMS Research Recognition Award, the Geis Foundation Award, the Simon P. Hullihen Award, the Louisiana Dental Association's Distinguished Service Award, The American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon's Harry Archer Award, and is a Fullbright Scholar. He has served on the editorial board of several surgical and dental journals including the Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and International College of Dentists. Dr. Kent is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). He served on the ABOMS Advisory and Examining Committee for 6 years, the Board of Directors for 7 years, and was President of ABOMS 1987-88.
Dr. Kent and his wife, Virginia, have raised five children. Dr. Kent’s son, John, practices OMS in North Carolina. Dr. Kent enjoys golf and sailing, and many family trips to Nebraska, Colorado, and Texas.

Professor and Assistant Dean of Advanced Education and Hospitals Head, Department of Dentistry, MCLANO
Randy Malloy was born and raised in central Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. Subsequently, he attended the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and received his D.D.S. with honors in 1971. While a student at the University of Iowa, he accomplished several research projects and was the author of several articles; he was elected to OKU in 1971. Dr. Malloy then pursued a research path at LSU Medical Center in New Orleans on a NIH Fellowship and received a Ph.D. in Anatomy in 1975. From 1975 to 1976 he served in the United States Air Force at Wilford Hall USAF Base in San Antonio, Tx.. After the Air Force he returned to LSU Medical Center in New Orleans, where he was an Assistant Professor in the Cell Biology and Anatomy Department. From 1978 to 1982, Randy trained at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency in the LSU School of Dentistry/Charity Hospital New Orleans.
From 1982 until 2003 he was in private practice in Lafayette, LA., and maintained part-time appointments in Cell Biology & Anatomy as well as Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the LSU Medical Center, LSU School of Dentistry and Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA. In 2003, Dr. Malloy returned to LSUHSC/Charity Hospital New Orleans in a full-time position as Associate Professor and Head, Department of Dentistry at MCLNO (Charity Hospital New Orleans); with appointments in the Departments of Cell Biology and Anatomy and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the LSU Schools of Dentistry and Medicine. Over the years, Dr. Malloy had been the research mentor to several residents in various dental specialties, as well as Masters and Ph.D. students. Randy is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He has been a member of several local, state, regional, and national committees associated with the ADA and the AAOMS. Randy is currently serving as Chairman of the Committee on Residency Education and Training for the AAOMS.
Post-Katrina, August 31, 2005, everything changed. Dr. Malloy was appointed by the Dean of the LSUSD as project director to rebuild the “Interim” LSU Dental School in Baton Rouge, LA. With the help of many colleagues, faculty, staff, residents and students a 132 chair clinic was completed by March of 2006. Dr. Malloy also served as chairman of the LSUSD committee charged with overseeing the rebuilding of the LSUSD in New Orleans; the clinics reopened in New Orleans at the beginning of September, 2007. Last year, he was promoted to Assistant Dean for Advanced Education and Hospitals at LSUSD, and currently serves on a number of LSUSD, LSUHSC committees.
Post-Katrina, Randy’s primary home is still in Lafayette, LA. where he lives with his wife Ty, and artist, and three miniature schnauzers. He has two grown daughters and three granddaughters, all living in Lafayette. When he has time, he enjoys traveling and fellowship with his family and friends, attempting golf, and taking walks with his dogs.

Assistant Professor Director of Undergraduate Education
Dr. O’Brien is a native of this area. He was born in New Orleans and grew up in Chalmette. He received his pre-dental requirements from Louisiana State University after just two years and remained on the Dean’s list, while he was there. Dr. O’Brien attended Loyola University Dental School and graduated in1970 near the top of his class with a D.D.S. degree. His honor societies included C. Victor Vignes, O.K.U. and Alpha Sigma Nu. He then completed an internship and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery at Charity Hospital in 1973 and was the chief resident in his final year. Dr. O’Brien is a diplomate of the Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Board of Dental Anesthesia and is a fellow of the American, Southeastern, and Louisiana Societies of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is also a member of the American, Louisiana, and New Orleans Dental Societies and the American Dental Society of Anesthesia.
Dr. O’Brien has been associated with the Louisiana State University Dental School in various part time capacities for the past twenty-five years. He is published in the Triple-O Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. O’Brien is now on full time appointment with the school and his academic rank is Clinical Associate Professor. He is Director of the undergraduate program, which includes all didactic courses and clinics. Prior to teaching full time, he was in full scope private practice as an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon for twenty- seven years. While still in private practice, Dr. O’Brien also graduated from Loyola Law School in 1998 and has served as an attorney for the Louisiana State Board of Dentistry. He still does some work with the board including the inspection of offices to certify them for the administration of intravenous conscious sedation and also as a consultant to the board on difficult and complicated dental disciplinary cases.
Dr. O’Brien also teaches a variety of continuing education oral surgery courses including all types of anesthesia, medical emergencies in the dental office, and mal-practice lectures. Dr. O’Brien is active in St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Slidell, where he now lives. He gives all credit for his accomplishments to his beautiful wife, Lyndall, and his proudest accomplishments are his three children: Dawn, Michael, and Katie.

Assistant Professor Director of Residency Program
Dr. Perenack is a native of Alberta, Canada, has been a full time faculty member with LSU OMS since 2003. He assumed the duties of Residency Director of the program in May, 2005. Prior to this he completed his residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at LSU-New Orleans in 2002, with a one year fellowship in full body cosmetic surgery in Texas with Howard Tobin MD the following year. Previously, Dr. Perenack received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alberta in 1992, and then went on to receive his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University in California graduating OKU, and Alpha-Omega, in 1996. He completed his Medical Degree from Louisiana State University Medical School – New Orleans, graduating AOA, in 1999.
Dr. Jon has focused his efforts primarily in the field of cosmetic facial surgery. Board certified by both the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, he has rapidly developed an almost exclusively facial cosmetic surgery practice. Always interested in expanding the scope of other surgeons, Dr. Perenack has become a regular lecturer at the national meetings for the AAOMS and American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He has published numerous articles in the scientific literature and has received several awards including the AAOMS Faculty Educator Development Award. Dr. Perenack is married to Cherie and has two children. He is an avid oil painter and enjoys reading in his spare time.

Clinical Professor and Director of Research
Dr. Block graduated from the University of Rochester in 1975, attaining both a BA in Biology and a BS in Biomedical Engineering. He completed his dental training at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1979, receiving his D.M.D. cum laude in a special field. He completed his residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the LSU School of Dentistry in 1983. He served as a full time faculty member for twenty-three years. He is currently Clinical Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Block is the editor-in-chief of four textbooks on dental implants, Endosseous Implants for Maxillofacial Reconstruction, Implants in Dentistry, Color Atlas of Dental Implant Surgery – edition 1, and a new edition of the Color Atlas of Dental Implant Surgery edition 2 released in 2007. He is Past President of the Academy of Osseointegration, and has been program chairman for three of their annual programs. Dr. Block serves on the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Committee on Continuing Education. Dr. Block has been an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a Section Editor on Dental Implants for the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Block is particularly interested in reconstruction of the jaw to provide ideal bone for implant placement and esthetic replacement of missing teeth, the use of multiple techniques and implants to reconstruct significant atrophic conditions, and interceptive strategies for rehabilitating extraction sites with implant restorations.

Clinical Professor and Residency Director Charlotte, NC
Dale Misiek is a native of Windsor Locks Connecticut and attended the University of Connecticut in Storrs graduating in 1974 with a BA in Biology. He completed his dental training at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine receiving his DMD in 1978. He then moved to New Orleans where he completed a 4 year residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the LSU School of Dentistry in 1982. He practiced full time in New Orleans from 1982-1984 after which he returned to LSU to serve as a full time faculty member for 14 years. In 1998, he resigned his full time position at LSU to return to private practice in Charlotte, NC. He has maintained a part time position as a clinical professor for the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and directs the resident rotation in Charlotte, NC at Carolina’s Medical Center.
During Dr. Misiek’s tenure at the LSU School of Dentistry he participated in the full scope of scholarly activity with research, publications in textbooks and journals, and numerous presentations at national and regional meetings on the subjects of orthognathic surgery, cosmetic surgery and implant reconstruction. He was an examiner for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from 1990-1996 and served as a section chairman for 2 years during that tenure.
Dr. Misiek continues to practice the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery in his private practice in Charlotte, NC. Of particular interest is the utilization of human recombinant BMP for bone grafting in the maxillofacial region. He has lectured at national meetings on this topic and continues to actively pursue clinical research in this area.
Pat and Dale Misiek have been married for 32 years and currently live in Belmont, NC, a suburb of Charlotte. While practice has occupied the majority of his time he has had the opportunity to enjoy three grown children, a daughter and two sons, as well as four dogs at home in Belmont, NC. Hobbies include traveling, fishing, and the futility of golf.

Clinical Associate Professor and Chief, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery EKL Hospital, Baton Rouge
Charles “Grady” Hornsby DDS, a native of Denham Springs, Louisiana, is a graduate of Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He attended the LSU School of Dentistry and received his degree in 1975. After graduating, Dr. Hornsby began a three-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at LSU School of Dentistry. He has been in private practice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana since 1978.
Dr. Hornsby is presently a Diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is on staff at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center and Earl K. Long Hospital, both of which are located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Dr. Hornsby regularly lectures for the local dental population. He is the Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at EKL Hospital in Baton Rouge. LSU OMS treats all facial trauma at the hospital and provides a significant amount of pathology and reconstruction, facial deformities, and cosmetic surgery for the LSU residents.
Dr. Hornsby is a member of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Sixth District Dental Association, Louisiana Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, Southeastern Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Association, and the Louisiana Dental Association. He is also a member of the C. Edmund Kells Society.
